Christmas shoppers in Merthyr Tydfil have been given a welcome gift – free parking in the town centre at weekends.

The Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil Business Improvement District (BID) and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council say the park for free scheme will encourage people to shop local and support local businesses.

Shoppers will now be able to park for free on Fridays and Saturdays from 16 November up until 28th December 2024.

Council Leader, Cllr Brent Carter said: “Free parking during the Christmas season has historically been a great benefit to our local economy. It allows shoppers to fully enjoy and support our wonderful shops and eateries without the stress or cost of parking.”

Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil, Business Improvement District Manager, Elizabeth Bedford said: “It’s important to encourage visitors and to shop local to support the town centre. We are grateful to the local authority for their support, the free parking will help everyone.”
