Families across Powys are being invited to make the most of the school summer holidays with a packed programme of activities, events and experiences at the county’s libraries, museums and archives.
Whether you’re looking for creative activities, a day out with the family, opportunities to explore local history, or ways to keep children engaged over the summer break, there is something for everyone to enjoy. And all of them are free, so they won’t put a dent in your family’s budget.
One of the highlights of the summer is the return of the Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children to discover the joy of reading during the holidays. Families are invited to visit their local library to sign up and take part in this year’s challenge, helping young readers build confidence, imagination and a lifelong love of books while earning rewards along the way.

From today (Friday 17 July) Y Lanfa museum, Welshpool will be welcoming visitors as work continues to complete the displays. Families, will be able to see how the exhibitions are being put together, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at museum work and how displays are created and cared for.
Visitors can also enjoy the exciting ‘The Art of Meg Stevens: Local Nature and Landscapes’ exhibition at y Gaer, Brecon, offering a fantastic opportunity to experience the work of one of Wales’ most celebrated contemporary artists. As well as activities and events, which include music, crafts, Lego, stories and rhymes, and treasure hunts, families are encouraged to ask at their local library about borrowing a range of useful items that may be available, including balance bikes, sports bags and Boromi bags. Availability varies by location, so residents should check with their nearest library to find out what can be borrowed.
