Leading bike share firm nextbike is encouraging people to cycle around Cardiff on Clean Air Day by offering free rides to its customers.

Registered nextbike customers will be offered two hours of free cycling on Clean Air Day, (Thursday October 8), to remind people to do their bit to keep air pollution levels down.

Every year, air pollution causes up to 36,000 deaths in the UK.

Led by Global Action Plan, Clean Air Day brings together communities, businesses, schools and the health sector to improve public understanding of air pollution, how it can affect us and what we can do to tackle the problem.

Since launching in the UK in 2014, nextbike customers have clocked up 2.65 million rentals, riding more than 5 million km. This has helped to save more than 99 thousand tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Krysia Solheim, nextbike UK MD, said Clean Air Day was the perfect time for people to consider their transport choices.

“We all have a part to play in keeping our air clean,” said Ms Solheim. “Cycling is one of the most sustainable, environmentally-friendly and healthiest ways of moving around our towns and cities. During lockdown, much of the UK saw traffic and pollution levels drop to levels not seen since the 1970s. But levels have already started to creep back up. It’s vital we build on the new love of cycling that many people found over the summer.

“By offering vouchers enabling people to take advantage of two hours of free nextbike access, we hope people will choose to cycle on Thursday to continue the momentum that saw cleaner air for everyone across the UK.”

The two hours free can be taken from today until the end of Thursday, October 8. Customers simply need to enter the code CLEANAIR20 into their nextbike app to access the offer.
