Eva Clarke, who survived the Holocaust, has this week officially been awarded the Freedom of the County Borough of Blaenau Gwent, at the General Offices Ebbw Vale.

The honour was presented by Councillor Steve Thomas, Leader of Blaenau Gwent, in recognition of the significant work that Mrs Clarke does in sharing testimonials of her family’s experiences for future generations. Mrs Clarke regularly speaks publicly of her family’s experiences during the Holocaust and volunteers as a speaker for the Holocaust Educational Trust. Through her testimonials, she hopes people learn from the Holocaust and combat modern day instances of racism and prejudice.

    Mrs Eva Clarke said:
“I’m amazed. When I heard I was completely overwhelmed, surprised and completely honoured. It makes me even more proud of my Welsh connections.”

Councillor Steve Thomas, Leader of Blaenau Gwent Council said:
“I am delighted that Mrs Eva Clarke has accepted the Freedom of the Borough of Blaenau Gwent. She does invaluable work in raising awareness and understanding of the horrors of the Holocaust for future generations through her public speaking.”
