UWTSD Motorcycle Engineering graduate Ilias Iatrakis, from Swansea, has been part of the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team engineering squad that secured the 2026 FIM Endurance World Championship.
As an Electronics Application Engineer, he contributed to the manufacturer’s first world endurance title, sealed with victory at the Bol d’Or 24-hour race in France. The championship made BMW Motorrad the first European manufacturer to win the FIM Endurance World Championship, following victories at Spa-Francorchamps and a podium at the Suzuka 8 Hours earlier in the season.
Ilias said: “Winning the FIM Endurance World Championship was a very special achievement. Going from studying Motorcycle Engineering at UWTSD to contributing to BMW Motorrad’s first Endurance World Championship title just two years after graduating is something I am extremely proud of. The technical knowledge and practical experience I gained at UWTSD continue to provide an important foundation for the work I do today.”
Dr Owen Williams said: “We are incredibly proud to see Ilias play a part in such a historic achievement for BMW Motorrad and international motorcycle racing. His success highlights the talent, dedication and technical expertise developed through our Motorcycle Engineering programme and demonstrates the impact our graduates are making across the global motorsport industry.”
