Gas pipe upgrade enters next phase with road closure in Aberdare

Motorists in Aberdare are being advised to plan ahead as the next phase of a major gas network upgrade gets underway later this month.

Gas emergency and pipeline service Wales & West Utilities will begin work along Abernant Road on 20 July as part of its ongoing programme to modernise the gas network across the wider Aberdare area.

The work will require a northbound road closure between the junctions of the A4059 and Cwmbach Road until 31 August. The start date has been timed to coincide with the school holidays in an effort to reduce disruption.

Engineers have been working in the area since May to upgrade the gas network, helping to ensure gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses for years to come.

The project forms part of Wales & West Utilities’ investment of more than £2.4 million over the next 18 months to replace ageing gas pipes across the wider Aberdare area. In total, more than eight kilometres of gas mains will be upgraded as part of the programme.

Andrew Coleman, who is managing the project for Wales & West Utilities, said:

“We’re investing in our gas network to ensure it remains safe, reliable and fit for the future for the customers we serve. We’ll be keeping the local community updated on these works and working with the local authority, and other key partners, to keep disruption to a minimum.

“We understand our work can cause disruption, but it is essential to maintain a resilient gas network that households and business can rely on every day.

“While much of the gas network is out of sight, it plays a vital role in daily life, from heating homes to cooking meals and we know how important it is that gas is there when people need it.

“Once we’ve completed this intensive phase of work, we’ll leave behind an upgraded network that meets today’s energy needs, and is ready to transport greener gases in the future. By completing this work now, barring any emergency repairs, we can avoid returning to the area and causing further disruption to the local community for decades.”

Wales & West Utilities is encouraging motorists to allow extra time for their journeys while the road closure is in place and has thanked residents and businesses for their patience during the essential works.
