A community development grant scheme for local initiatives has opened for applications across Newport.
Charities, social enterprises, voluntary sector organisations, community groups are eligible to apply for the scheme, which will fund activities that contribute to one of the following areas:
    • community building
    • crime prevention
    • breaking down barriers to opportunity
    • environmental education
    • Welsh culture preservation

Schools will also be able to apply for funding for extracurricular activities that provide additional value beyond regular school programming in one of these areas.

The scheme is being administered by What Impact on behalf of the council. Last year, What Impact administered a similar scheme on behalf of the council, which supported cultural, heritage and sporting projects.

Grants will be available again this year for sports clubs through the scheme.

    What you need to know

Applications will be accepted across two windows.

The first window opened last week (Thursday 15 May) and runs until Thursday 12 June. Applications will then be reviewed with an aim to starting delivery from July.

The second application window will open in September and close in October. All activities funded through the scheme must be completed by February 2026.

    Support and further information

Detailed criteria for applying for a grant is available on What Impact’s website.

What Impact will be running support sessions where interested parties can find out more information about the scheme.

The first session will be a webinar on Monday 19 May, from 1-2pm.

They will also be running two in-person sessions at the Riverfront Theatre on Friday 23 and Wednesday 28 May. Both sessions will run from 4-6pm.

To register your interest in the scheme or book a place at one of the sessions, email the team at [email protected].
