How to protect your vision all year round

Your sight can be incredibly important. Without it, you may not be able to do your job, or even some of the things you love. While you may think you currently do all you can to look after your eyes, there may be some things that you have missed out. Taking the time to consider how you can better protect your vision could allow you to continue seeing as clearly as possible, even as your eyes start to age.

The use of sunglasses

While sunglasses may be worn predominantly in the summer, they may have their uses at other times as well. This can include after eye surgery, to reduce the symptoms of a headache, or even on a bright winter’s day. When you already have issues with your vision, you may find a pair of prescription sunglasses to be of use. As you would with your skin, protecting your eyes from burning can be incredibly important. The sun’s UV rays can do damage to your eyes, including increasing the likelihood of cataracts developing much sooner than if you were to look after them. Keeping your sunglasses in your car, bag, or briefcase could allow you to have them to hand should they be required.

Protection while working

Undertaking some jobs, such as construction or repairs, can require the use of personal protective equipment, or PPE. Within this can be the use of an eye mask. While you may not be carrying out work anywhere near your eyes, there is always the chance that debris could become airborne and scratch the surface of your cornea. In serious cases, flames, gases, or even sharp equipment could also cause damage. Therefore, wearing an eye mask alongside your other PPE is essential. Should you have a foreign body in your eye, you may want to rinse it out with an eye bath and speak to a medical professional. This may be especially important if you cannot remove the debris yourself, or you have noticed changes to your usual level of sight.

Educate yourself on common conditions

There may be a number of conditions that many people find themselves facing each year. Taking dry eyes as an example, there can be multiple reasons why this may occur, as well as ways for you to fix the issue. Dry eyes may often occur more in winter, and lead to discomfort, itching, and even blurred vision. Alongside keeping yourself hydrated, you may also find that reducing the amount of time spent looking at screens can also help to keep your eyes lubricated. Should this become a significant issue, you may want to look into getting eye drops from your local chemist which can help to saturate the eyes. Speaking to a doctor or optician may also help.

Your eyesight can be incredibly valuable. Therefore, it should be protected. Learning more about eye health, and taking steps to maintain or improve it, could allow you to see more clearly than ever before.
