Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners – the international mark of a quality park or green space.

A record-breaking 201 parks and green spaces, including universities, cemeteries, woodlands and allotments across Wales have met the high standards needed to receive the coveted Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award.

Among this year’s recipients of the Green Flag Award are, for the first time, Aberdare Park, Wrexham Cemetery and Swansea University’s Bay Campus.

Glanrhyd Hospital in Bridgend also becomes the first hospital in Wales to achieve Green Flag status.

The Green Flag Award programme is delivered in Wales by environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Welsh Government. It is judged by green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, environmental management and community involvement.

Minister for Environment, Hannah Blythyn said:

“Parks and green spaces play an important role in our communities, so it’s encouraging to see such a diverse range of sites in Wales receiving Green Flag Awards. Our parks and green spaces are a haven for wildlife and are vital to our own health and wellbeing. I’d like to congratulate all of the sites for providing excellent, year-round facilities and events for people in Wales.”

New winners of the Green Flag Community Award include Coed Llwynonn on Anglesey, Pontsticill Village in Merthyr Tydfil and St Tudno’s Churchyard (Great Orme), Conwy. These sites rely on volunteers to maintain their excellent facilities.

    Porthkerry

Six sites also achieved Green Heritage Site Accreditation, including Margam Park in Neath Port Talbot, Cathays Cemetery in Cardiff and Greenfield Heritage in Flintshire. This special award, endorsed by Cadw, recognises sites that are both historically significant and meet Green Flag criteria.

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy said:

“We’re delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Awards in Wales. The 201 flags flying are a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff and volunteers across the country who work tirelessly to maintain Green Flag Award standards.

“I’d encourage everyone to get outdoors this summer and enjoy the incredible parks and green spaces we have on our doorstep.”

A full list of award winners can be found on the Keep Wales Tidy website www.keepwalestidy.cymru/greenflag

You can put your park or green space on the map by getting involved too. Visit the Keep Wales Tidy website www.keepwalestidy.cymru for more information.
