Residents and visitors are being warned of possible traffic disruption in Pontypridd as the demolition of the former police station and Berw Road Car Park continues.
Temporary traffic lights will operate at the Berw Road and Bridge Street junction from 10am on Monday, August 17, until the end of Friday, August 21.
A lane closure will also be in place near the pharmacy and medical centre on Berw Road while scaffolding is installed on part of the building.
No roads will be closed, and buses and other large vehicles will be able to continue using all routes. The temporary lights will be manually controlled during peak periods to help manage traffic.
However, the arrangements are expected to cause delays on Berw Road and surrounding roads. Motorists are being advised to avoid the route and consider alternatives where possible.
The work has been scheduled during the school summer holiday to reduce disruption.
It will be the first of two anticipated periods of short-term traffic management affecting Berw Road. Details of the second period are still being arranged and will be announced at a later date.
The demolition of the former Pontypridd Police Station and Berw Road Car Park began on August 3. Council contractor Prichard’s is expected to continue the work until early 2027.
Initial work includes establishing a site compound, carrying out specialist surveys and removal work, completing internal preparations, installing scaffolding and beginning the demolition of the buildings.
A lane closure on Morgan Street, near Pontypridd Bus Station, has been in place since August 3 and will remain throughout the demolition phase. Footways around the former police station and car park are also closed.
Temporary traffic lights will be needed on the section of Morgan Street outside the former police station during a later stage of the work. The dates and arrangements have not yet been confirmed, although no road closure is currently anticipated.
The work is being coordinated with localised repairs to Berw Road Bridge, also known as White Bridge, which are taking place from August 10 to 16.
The bridge repairs will be completed before the Berw Road traffic management begins on August 17. White Bridge will remain open whenever traffic management is in place on Berw Road.
Berw Road Car Park permanently closed on July 30, while the former police station building has transferred to the council. A new town centre police base is due to be established on Taff Street.
The council is exploring a mixed-use redevelopment across the former police station and car park sites. Possible options include an improved public space, a replacement car park, better walking and cycling links, junction improvements at Bridge Street and new residential, commercial and cultural uses.
The demolition is being supported through the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme.
