Pembrokeshire County Council has informed residents and visitors that Narberth Castle will remain temporarily closed beyond the initial conservation period, as additional essential safety works have been identified.
Following the recent programme of stabilisation and conservation, further inspection has revealed additional structural concerns that require urgent attention to ensure the long-term safety and preservation of this important heritage site.
The site, including the public footpath, will remain closed while further works are undertaken.
These will include reinforcement of unstable masonry, removal of hazardous debris, and installation of protective measures to prevent future deterioration.
Due to the nature of the terrain and the equipment required, full site access must remain restricted to protect public safety.
Cllr Rhys Sinnett, Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “We understand the disappointment this extended closure may cause, but the safety of our residents and visitors must come first. These additional works are vital to ensure Narberth Castle remains a safe and accessible landmark for generations to come.”
Local Member Cllr Marc Tierney, added: “Narberth Castle holds deep cultural and historical significance for our community. While the delay is frustrating, we are committed to ensuring the site is properly restored and protected.”
The Council will continue to provide updates as the project progresses and is working closely with heritage specialists and local stakeholders to explore future improvements to the site once it reopens.
