Neath Port Talbot Council has unveiled a new Digital Independent Solutions Suite, designed to help adults with disabilities and additional learning needs explore how smart technology can enhance independence and daily living skills.

The purpose-built suite replicates a real home environment, featuring a mock flat complete with a kitchen and living space. This setting allows individuals to experience how mainstream and specialist smart devices such as smart plugs, bulbs, and video doorbells can be integrated into everyday routines.

Through hands-on demonstrations, they can discover how technology can provide reminders, easy-to-follow schedules, and safety features, enabling them to develop essential life skills. These innovations aim to empower individuals to live more independently, opening pathways to volunteering and employment opportunities.

The suite will be available to those attending the council’s Independent Living Skills (ILS) Centre in Neath.

Councillor Jo Hale, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Health, said: “This new suite is an outstanding step forward in supporting independence for adults with disabilities. By showcasing how smart technology can make everyday tasks easier and safer, we are giving people the tools and confidence to lead more fulfilling lives. It’s about creating opportunities and breaking down barriers.”

The council also operates a Digital Solutions Suite at Cimla Health and Social Care Centre. This facility is open to anyone who needs support due to their age or disability, as well as carers and professionals who want to explore how smart technology can make a difference in everyday life.
