Cardiff is about to get a new dining experience with the opening of ONJA on Barrack Lane. A £25,000 micro loan from the Development Bank of Wales has part-funded the start-up costs.

Self-confessed foodie and mum of two boys, Justina John has used the loan from the Development Bank to fund the fit-out of her new African restaurant and takeaway that will offer a taste of Tanzania. ONJA is due to open on Monday 16 December 2024.

Open for lunch and early evening meals from Monday to Saturday, ONJA will offer authentic cuisine for dining in, delivery and takeaway. The restaurant will have in the region of 40 covers.

Director Justina John was raised in Tanzania but has lived in Cardiff for 25 years. She said: “”Food is a universal language that fosters peace and ignites happiness. It brings people together, regardless of their status or background, reminding us that we all share a common bond through the joy of sharing a meal.

“My passion is food. I’ve always loved cooking and have fond memories of my childhood, helping my Mum in the kitchen at home. However, the time has never been right to leave a secure job. The loan from the Development Bank has given me the confidence to take the leap of faith and follow my dreams.  I feel like I was born to cook, and I can’t wait to share the taste of Tanzania with Cardiff.”

Charlotte Price is an Investment Executive with the Development Bank. She said: “Justina’s love of food is infectious. It is great to see her bringing a unique and authentic dining experience to Cardiff in such a prime location and we’re pleased that our support has enabled her to make this happen.”

The loan for ONJA came from the £500 million Wales Flexible Investment Fund. Financed by Welsh Government, the Fund is for deals between £25,000 and £10 million. Loans, mezzanine finance, and equity investments are available for Welsh businesses with terms of up to 15 years.
