A new art installation at Graig y Rhacca Primary School in Caerphilly celebrates the environment and community.

Pupils from the school worked with the local community and artist Stephanie Roberts to design and develop the environmental themed sculpture.  Funding for the project was provided by Caerphilly County Borough Council, through its Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS) environmental improvements programme.

The mosaic leaf design, which incorporates the message ‘We respect our environment’, has been installed at the entranceway to the school.  South Wales based artist Stephanie said “For this project the children had to absorb themselves in their topic and then engage with their families and friends to fully understand that the artwork was just as much about the community as them.”

Cllr Shayne Cook, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, added “The WHQS programme has seen over £260 million invested into Council owned homes in the borough and local communities.  The public art in Graig y Rhacca is a great example of how our Environmental Officers engaged the community to develop a unique project that will be a focal point for many years to come.”
