A series of major new wheeled sports facilities across the city are set to be considerably improved as part of a £3m Swansea Council investment.

The forum comes as the investment programme continues to transform provision for BMX riders, skateboarders, and fans of other wheeled sports.

Once complete, the investment means people in most parts of Swansea won’t have to travel more than two miles to access an upgraded facility.

The forum will be led by specialists from Curve Studio, who have been appointed by the council to design the new and improved facilities.

Discussions at the forum will vary by site and will include progress updates, timelines, early designs, locations, feedback from completed projects and more detail on the newly confirmed schemes.

    Newly announced plans include:

    • Coed Gwilym Park dirt track and jumps in Clydach
    • Coed Bach Park dirt track in Pontarddulais
    • Morriston Park pump track
    • Heol Las Park pump track in Birchgrove
    • Maesteg Park pump track in St Thomas
    • Ynystawe Park skate park
    • A new regional skate park, although its location is yet to be confirmed
    • A pump track at SA1 Prince of Wales Docks that will form part of a new open green space designed for a range of leisure activities

Cllr Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said:

“We’re determined to make Swansea one of the best places in Wales for wheeled sports, and today’s announcement of further new locations shows the scale of our ambition.

“This investment is about creating opportunities in every part of the city – from pump tracks and dirt jumps to a regional skate park.

“The forum at Guildhall gives riders and residents the chance to see how plans are progressing, share their views and help shape facilities that will benefit Swansea for years to come.

“Our long-term aim is to create a connected, inclusive and high-quality network of wheeled sports facilities that support healthier lifestyles, youth engagement and stronger communities across Swansea.”

Upgrade work has already been completed on a new skatepark at Coed Bach in Pontarddulais and a skatepark at Parc Melin Mynach in Gorseinon.

Previously announced locations to benefit include pumptracks at Clyne Valley and Parc Melin Mynach in Gorseinon, a skate park at the Elba sports complex in Gowerton, and a mini-wheels facility in Blaenymaes.

Projects where work is now under way include a street plaza-style facility for wheeled sports at Victoria Park and an upgraded skate and wheeled sports facility at Mynydd Newydd in Penlan.

Construction is due to start in March on an upgraded facility at the Phoenix Centre in Townhill.

More information on the latest plans will be shared at a special forum in Guildhall on Wednesday February 25 from 5pm to 6.30pm.
