Since October 2017, Newydd Housing Association has seen over 450 attend its employability workshops and 37 have gone onto employment. This success rate means that Newydd are keen to further empower and positively challenge its local communities to ‘Be the Best You’ and support individuals into employment.

In the last 12 months, Newydd has put in place 13 work experience opportunities, where they have seen an increased appetite from young women to build careers in construction. The housing association, through its community benefits initiative, currently has two apprenticeships at its site in Treforest, which is being delivered by the Jehu Group.

Rachel Honey-Jones, community regeneration manager for Newydd said:

“It has been a fantastic year for our employability service, with so many of our tenants, as well as the wider community, benefiting from the opportunity to develop new skills, so that they have the chance to step into employment.

“The ‘Be the Best You’ campaign is just part of our commitment, as an organisation, to supporting more people into work in the next year; we hope to reach over 500 people and through our community benefits initiative, creating even more opportunities. Our partnerships with key organisations are vital to continuing this service in the long term.”

There have been 55 employability workshops since October 2017, where those attending gain the confidence and skills they need, such as CV writing, to seek employment. Newydd’s community regeneration team, through its partnerships with organisations such as Communities for Work (plus), Vale Homes, Inspire to Work, Careers Wales, PACE and Job Centre Plus, ensure that these individuals are prepared for the world of work so that they can be successful in their new careers from the outset.

The top five courses delivered are:

    1. CSCS card
    2. First Aid
    3. Manual Handling
    4. Health & Safety Level 1
    5. Food Hygiene
