Spaces for the award-winning New Year’s Eve event will be released in September. As with previous years, they will be released in stages, to ensure  as many people as possible has a chance to secure a much sought-after space.

This is your chance to join one of the most unique and celebrated sporting events in Wales, taking to the streets of historic Mountain Ash to celebrate the legend of Guto Nyth Bran

Spaces will be released as below:

    • Monday, September 11 – 10am
    • Monday, September 18 – 1pm
    • Monday, September 25 – 6pm

Join elite mens’ and womens’ races, fun run (fancy dress optional ) and children’s  race categories on the evening.

As well as a showcase of sporting achievement, Nos Galan is also a great family night out, with entertainment and fireworks – plus, of course, the chance to see the mystery runner. Which sporting star will it be in 2023?

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the Nos Galan Road Races, which were founded in 1958 by the late Bernard Baldwin MBE to celebrate local legend Guto Nyth Bran, who was said to be the fastest man on Earth and could catch a bird in his own hands.

While the races were halted temporarily in 1984, they were soon back and now attract over  2,000 runners from across the UK, competing at a range of levels in the historic races and thousands of spectators to the streets of Mountain Ash..

The event gets underway with the children’s race categories before we welcome the arrival of the celebrity Mystery Runner carrying the Nos Galan torch and igniting the beacon in the centre of town  – previous guests include Linford Christie, Nigel Owens, Chris Coleman, James Hook, Jamie Roberts, Nicole Cooke and more, following this there will be a spectacular firework display and something a little special for 2023. Then on your marks!… as the main rases take place including the Male and Female Elite races and the ever popular fun run.  –

Cllr Ann Crimmings, Chair of the Nos Galan Road Races Committee, said: “It’s that time again, when the coveted Nos Galan Road Races spaces go on sale and people start getting ready for their performance in one of the most unique sporting events in Wales.

“The fact it has been so popular for 65 years shows just what a great event Nos Galan is, for the competitors, participants and spectators. It was wonderful to be back on the streets of Mountain Ash last year, joined by George North, following two years as a virtual event.

“We know 2023 is going to be just as good and we invite you to take note of the release dates and make sure you secure a spot for yourself, your friends or your team mates.

    “See you New Year’s Eve!”
