Prepare to be dazzled as Disney On Ice: 100 Years of Wonder twirls back into the UK for its final run, bringing an unforgettable celebration of Disney magic to Cardiff. This enchanting production is a spellbinding treat for families, blending nostalgia, spectacular skating, and jaw-dropping special effects into a show that truly sparkles on the ice.

It had been a while since our last Disney On Ice experience, and this latest edition did not disappoint. From the moment Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy took to the ice, the excitement was palpable. The show follows Mickey as he embarks on a heartwarming journey to discover his most treasured memory of all time. Along the way, the audience is taken on a whirlwind adventure featuring beloved Disney characters, each with their own mesmerising moment in the spotlight.

A Whirlwind of Disney Magic

This interactive spectacle had everyone on their feet—clapping, singing, and waving along. The Disney team even invited young audience members to help kick off the show, creating a truly immersive experience. A fan cam roamed the arena, capturing the vibrant costumes worn by fans, adding an extra sprinkle of magic to the evening.

Clocking in at just under two hours (including an interval), the show is perfectly paced to keep younger fans engaged. It seamlessly weaves together multiple Disney tales, with some stories given more time to shine.

One of the standout moments was Moana’s breathtaking voyage across the ocean, where she teams up with the larger-than-life demigod, Maui.

With energetic performances, stunning choreography, and even fire on the ice (yes, you read that right!), this sequence was nothing short of spectacular. “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome” had the entire audience enchanted.

Another highlight was the vibrant world of Encanto, where we joined Mirabel and her magical family in their lively casita. Meanwhile, the kingdom of Arendelle was brought to life with dazzling snowfall effects as Elsa and Anna discovered the power of true love.

The crowd enthusiastically sang along to “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” and “Let It Go,” making for a truly magical atmosphere.

Nostalgic Nods & Unexpected Twists

With a century of Disney history to celebrate, the show paid tribute to some iconic moments, including Fantasia, where Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Apprentice spell brings a parade of brooms to life. These nostalgic nods added a charming depth to the performance.

Shorter segments featured beloved classics like The Little Mermaid, though a misplaced spotlight during our viewing slightly obstructed what should have been an awe-inspiring aerial display. Fortunately, later acrobatic performances made up for this minor hiccup.

Fans of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast may have wished for more from these timeless favourites, though it was a treat to hear “A Whole New World.” Toy Story characters made an appearance, but the musical numbers didn’t quite pack the same punch as others, missing the spark of their original scores.

Meanwhile, Finding Dory delivered a truly mesmerising underwater illusion, as the skaters’ fluid movements perfectly mimicked ocean currents, proving that ice and water scenes go hand in hand.

A World-Class Performance

The level of skill on display was nothing short of phenomenal. The skaters made every move look effortless, seamlessly gliding across the ice with gravity-defying stunts and intricate choreography—all while wearing elaborate costumes!

It’s no surprise to learn that the cast rehearses for over 550 hours to perfect each performance. The precision of the lifts, spins, and jumps showcased not only technical prowess but also incredible trust between the skaters. Some of the more daring stunts—like Moana’s fire-lit twirls or the heart-stopping aerial displays—had the audience gasping in awe.

The production itself is a marvel, featuring 181 props, 250 dazzling costumes, and an impressive set transported from city to city in 19 trucks. The sheer scale of it all is astounding, with each venue requiring approximately 10 hours to set up. The seamless transitions between different Disney worlds were impressive, keeping the audience engaged and captivated from start to finish.

A Show for All Ages

While Disney On Ice is often described as fun for the whole family, it’s especially magical for younger viewers experiencing their favourite characters brought to life for the first time. The wonder in their eyes was truly heartwarming, as they waved excitedly at their favourite princesses, heroes, and villains gliding effortlessly across the ice.
