The Weston Studio at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff is currently hosting a Christmas experience like no other.

NUTCRACKER (The Alternative Cabaret) is an exhilarating, queer reimagining of the classic Christmas tale, masterfully created by Wales Millennium Centre and Juliette Manon. Bold, irreverent, and brimming with energy, this production takes the audience on a journey into a world of whimsy and wickedness, where tradition is turned on its head, and expectation is gleefully upended.

From the moment you step into Le Crack, the transformed cabaret space, you’re transported into a dreamscape that feels both alluringly underground and vibrantly surreal. The set design is basic but it has everything that’s needed, including a trapdoor. With a clever reconfiguration the space looks bigger than previous years but still immerses the audience in the action.

Shadowy corners give way to dazzling, jewel-toned lighting, creating an atmosphere that is equal parts seedy glamour and magical wonder. The immersive but intimate setting makes it impossible to remain a mere observer—you feel like a co-conspirator in the Rat King’s chaotic, subversive kingdom.

At the helm of this dazzling production is Juliette Manon, whose direction is as daring as it is innovative. By situating E.T.A. Hoffmann’s beloved Nutcracker tale in a queer, contemporary world, they breathes fresh life into familiar characters and themes. The narrative intertwines the fantastical with the deeply human, exploring issues of love, identity both personal and gender, and power through a blend of burlesque, cabaret, and circus artistry.

The reimagined story isn’t afraid to challenge conventions, most notably through its unique take on the sugar plum fairy. In this version, the sugar plum fairy becomes a dogmatic force of resistance, clinging to outdated notions of gender roles—”pink is for girls, blue is for boys”—and attempting to quash the burgeoning romance between the Nutcracker and the Rat King. This subplot, which culminates in a shocking act of boxing the Nutcracker as punishment, serves as a sharp critique of rigid societal norms, all while maintaining the production’s trademark irreverence.

Music is a cornerstone of NUTCRACKER (The Alternative Cabaret), and the remixed score is a triumph. Sam Roberts and Heledd Watkins of HMS Morris have brilliantly reinvented Tchaikovsky’s iconic melodies, blending pulsating electronica with live instrumentation to create a soundtrack that feels at once familiar and electrifyingly new. The house band doesn’t just provide accompaniment—they’re integral to the energy and rhythm of the performance, elevating each moment to a sensory delight.

The cast, too, delivers performances that are nothing short of magnetic. Len Blanco’s comedic timing is impeccable, imbuing the Rat King with equal parts menace and charm. Diomede’s aerial stunts defy gravity, leaving the audience breathless with their artistry and physicality. Meanwhile, Cadbury Parfait’s burlesque act and Rotten Peach’s gender-bending performance bring a rebellious sensuality that challenges and celebrates notions of beauty and identity. In a quieter but equally impactful moment, Daisy Williams delivers a poignant monologue that adds a layer of introspection to the riotous spectacle.

The production stands out for its remarkable ability to seamlessly blend striking contrasts, creating a compelling and beautiful experience. Amid the glitter and the chaos, there are moments of genuine vulnerability and reflection. The Rat King’s musings on the duality of humanity—the vermin and the divine—linger in the mind long after the final curtain falls, inviting the audience to ponder their own contradictions.

NUTCRACKER (The Alternative Cabaret) is more than a performance; it’s an experience that revels in the unconventional and invites its audience to do the same. Whether you come for the stunning visual spectacle, the provocative reinterpretation of a holiday classic, or the chance to lose yourself in a world of joyful abandon, this show delivers on every level.

For anyone seeking an antidote to the usual holiday fare, this production offers an intoxicating blend of art, music, and mischief that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. Don’t miss your chance to join the revelry—this is a night at the theatre you won’t soon forget.

Catch NUTCRACKER (The Alternative Cabaret), running until 31st December 2024. Secure your tickets now via this link: https://www.wmc.org.uk/en/whats-on/2024/nutcracker-the-alternative-cabaret.
