Rib Ride team up with local volunteers to clean up Abermenai Point

Friends of the Isle of Anglesey Coast Path teamed up with Rib Ride Adventure Boat Tours to clean up the beach at Abermenai Point last Friday (15 March), marking the start of Keep Wales Tidy’s Spring Clean Cymru campaign.

A team of six volunteers used a RIB to reach the usually inaccessible area of the coast, removing over 25 bags of litter and recycling. A significant amount of plastic waste was found at the site, including large items such as traffic cones and farm plastics. Alarmingly, an enormous amount of tiny plastic fragments and nurdles were discovered embedded in the sand and pebble beach, which are extremely harmful to marine wildlife.

This year’s Spring Clean Cymru continues until Sunday 31 March. Environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy is calling on individuals, families, community groups, schools and businesses across Wales to get involved. Last year, an incredible 7,000 volunteers took part in more than 300 clean-ups across Wales.

Gareth Evans, Keep Wales Tidy Officer for Anglesey said:

“It was disheartening to see so much litter caught up in the shingle and dunes in this ecological and historically significant stretch of coastline. However, the success of this trial means we’ll be organising more RIB assisted clean-ups on difficult to access beaches over the coming year.

“Spring Clean Cymru is an easy, fun way for people to make a difference.  Whether you choose to clean up your own neighbourhood, your favourite beach, park or beauty spot – every piece of litter removed from the natural environment matters.”

The Spring Clean Cymru event at Abermenai Point was funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
