R&M Williams has earned two respected construction awards for its work on Coastal Housing’s Urban Quarter project on the High Street in Swansea.

The Cardiff and Swansea-based construction company has earned a Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Award for its work on the development, which is set to include the first dedicated space in Wales to be built purely for use by the creative industries.

The Urban Quarter has been designed as a vibrant environment with its own unique identity and a universal appeal at the heart of Swansea’s city centre, including 76 apartments, four floors of office space and a number of high street facing retail units.

The Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Awards (LABC) celebrates the construction industry and recognises and rewards excellent buildings, outstanding companies, partnerships and people.

R&M Williams was shortlisted in the Welsh Awards for its work with local authority building control and received the award at the finals in Cardiff.

Swansea’s Urban Quarter also earned the family business a silver Considerate Constructors National Site Award, which was presented at the grand final in London in April.

The Considerate Constructors Award (CCS) assesses how well a construction company works with the local community when taking on a project.

R&M Williams scored 42 out of 50 from its inspection and was praised for its engagement with the local community, attention to environmental matters as well as its participation in local career days.

Darryn Parry, Managing Director of R&M Williams, said:

“The Urban Quarter construction has been such an exciting project for us at R&M Williams, and to have received these awards for our work on the village only goes to show that it’s an incredibly innovative development.

“The Urban Quarter includes residential, retail and office space – including the impressive Creative Cluster, Wales’ first space for the creative industries, and so it’s been quite a challenging and equally rewarding project for our team.

“We realised early on that involving the community in the process was pivotal and so we are thrilled to have won both a Considerate Constructors Award and an LABC award. We really look forward to working with Coastal Housing Group and Holder Mathias architects on more projects in the future.”
