Shoppers heading into Swansea city centre can travel on buses for free on weekends in the countdown to Christmas starting on November 16.

Christmas can be an expensive time and the council has committed to help families save money on travel costs by offering free bus travel during the festive period.

Apart from the free weekend rides, bus services will also be free on Monday December 23 and on Christmas Eve and then from December 27 to 7pm on New Year’s Eve.

In total residents starting and finishing their journeys in Swansea will be able to travel for free on 19 days for Christmas.

Swansea Council Leader, Rob Stewart, welcomed the latest offer and hopes everyone will take advantage.

He said: “This is the fourth Christmas period that we have provided free transport for families in Swansea. It’s also our biggest-ever festive free travel offer.

“I’m proud that once again this winter Swansea will be doing all it can to support our residents. This event will be part of a comprehensive package ensuring we deliver “A Christmas for All” which will include food support, activities, events and welcoming spaces that we will be providing to help residents this winter.

“Christmas can be an expensive time for everyone. We have committed to ensuring families in Swansea can save a bit of money on travel costs, leave the car at home and save their petrol money for enjoying the festive period.

“This offer is not just about encouraging people into the city centre – although we do want businesses to benefit from seeing more people coming into the city.

“This is also about giving the public the chance to travel all across Swansea, whether it’s to visit family members or just enjoy to what Swansea has to offer.”

Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “One of the main aims has been to encourage more people to use public transport in Swansea.

“We know lots of people travel by car and may not have been on a bus previously. This free bus offer is a great way of introducing more people to public transport and reduce the number of cars on our roads.

“It’s important we support public transport operators in Swansea and do what we can to increase passenger numbers.”
