Early work will soon start on the construction of a new street plaza-style facility for skateboarding and other wheeled sports at Swansea’s Victoria Park.

Swansea Council has appointed a company called Wheelscape to carry out the work, which is anticipated to be finished by the end of March next year.

Workers will be setting up on site this week, so the existing skate park there will soon be closed. If possible, the existing mini ramp at Victoria Park will be retained and relocated.

Initial groundworks will take place on site first before main construction begins next month.

No works will take place over the Christmas period.

The new facility will be part of a £3m council investment in many wheeled sports facilities across the city for the benefit of skateboarders, BMXers and fans of other wheeled sports.

Experts from a company called Curve Studio have been working closely with the council on the plans, which mean people in most parts of Swansea won’t have to travel more than two miles to reach a new or improved wheeled sports facility.

Cllr Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said:

“Victoria Park’s new street-plaza facility is another major step in our commitment to providing high-quality wheeled sports spaces right across Swansea.

“This investment is about giving residents of all ages more opportunities to get active, develop their skills and enjoy safe, modern facilities close to home.

“With work now beginning at Victoria Park and improvements either complete, under way or planned in other communities across the city, we’re creating a network of skate, BMX and wheeled sports sites that will be within easy reach for most residents.

“These projects are a great example of how we’re working with local partners and specialist designers to deliver facilities that reflect what users have asked for, helping serve our communities for many years to come.”

Work contracts will soon be awarded for skate park upgrades at both Mynydd Newydd in Penlan and the Phoenix Centre in Townhill.
