Swansea pensioners missing out on vital support

Swansea Council is urging people aged 66 and over to check if they qualify for Pension Credit.

Pension Credit gives extra help with living costs to people over state pension age and on a low income.

People might get extra help if they are a carer, severely disabled, or responsible for a child or young person.

Hayley Gwilliam, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Support, said: “The cost of living crisis is hitting us all and we know that there are pensioners in Swansea who are struggling to make ends meet yet are missing out on money that they are entitled to.

“We also know that each additional £1 people receive is worth £4 to the local economy so by claiming benefits that they are entitled to, they help support local jobs and local businesses and we desperately need this, especially now.

“Entitlement to Pension Credit also accesses claimants to fringe benefits including help with travel costs to hospital and NHS charges, access to a free TV licence if you are aged 75 or over, discretionary assistance payments to assist with purchasing one off items and they are automatically passported through the financial means test for housing benefit and council tax reduction.

“This is vital help that people are entitled to so I would urge anyone who thinks they may be eligible to check.”

The council has partnered with Kin Cymru who provide a telephone advice service with appointments to help people with benefits.

Phone 01792 485110 between 9.45am and 2.15pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Welsh Government have also funded ‘advice link’ which is a service from Citizen’s Advice to assist those who would not usually seek advice – https://gov.wales/claim-whats-yours
