Plans for a stunning new makeover for the city centre’s outdoor amphitheatre are rapidly taking shape this summer.
Improvements to the steps, new handrails and a mains power supply have all been fitted at the much-loved venue sitting opposite the LC in Swansea.
Now the council is adding a new eye-catching stage canopy that will see the venue transformed for performers and audiences alike.
Work on the upgrade is due to start later this year after the summer season is over – which this year features the Amplitude two-day free music festival next month.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration, Events and Tourism, said the improvements will turn heads and bring fresh vitality to the venue which sits between Swansea Arena and the National Waterfront Museum.
He said: “This upgrade for the amphitheatre is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to bring top quality cultural, music and creative events to our city, offering something fresh and different for visitors and locals alike.
“Last year’s Amplitude festival proved there is enthusiasm for this kind of outdoor destination to add to our network of venues ranging from the big festival location at Singleton Park to the magnificent Swansea Arena and Grand Theatre as well as many private-sector music and cultural attractions.”
The sail-type canopy will cover the stage area at the base of the amphitheatre and the first six rows, so that audiences will continue to enjoy the venue’s outdoor feel while performers will be sheltered from the weather.
Cllr Francis-Davies said: “This addition will significantly extend the venue’s usability throughout the year, supporting a wider range of cultural and community events, as well as providing an outdoor venue unique in Swansea.
He added: “The Amphitheatre is one of the city’s key assets—an iconic space that plays an important role in our public realm and cultural infrastructure.
“These improvements are part of our commitment to ensuring it remains a vibrant and safe venue for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.
“It will complement some brilliant performance spaces we already have around the city, promote and support our creative industries and offer a different kind of audience and performer experience that’s hard to find elsewhere.
“We’re really looking forward to seeing it taking shape in the coming months.”
