Following consultations with residents and businesses, work to begin the Growing Newtown, green infrastructure project will begin on Monday 7 February.
The Growing Newtown project forms part of Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Programme which supports economic regeneration and wider sustainable development.
Powys County Council in partnership with Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council have now appointed local contractor, SDW Construction Ltd, who will begin working in the town centre on Monday 7 February.
The works, which will include landscaping and enhancement work, improved access, updated seating, additional planting areas and better drainage, are expected to take 16 weeks to complete. Pedestrian access to all shops and businesses will be maintained, however, the High Street will be closed to vehicles for the duration of the works.
Cllr Rosemarie Harris, Leader of Powys County Council, said: “It’s great news that we have secured £670,000 in grant funding from Welsh Government for the Growing Newtown project.
“Along with Powys County Council’s contribution of £240,000 and a further £20,000 from Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, we can really make a difference by rejuvenating four areas within the town centre: Back Lane and High Street junction, High Street, Severn Square, and Gas Street Car Park.”
Cllr Heulwen Hulme, Cabinet Member for Environment, added “The growing Newtown project will see much-needed improvements to these areas such as resurfacing works, enhancing green space, and improving drainage.
“We really appreciate all the feedback and engagement we have had with the residents and businesses of Newtown during the development of his project, and eagerly anticipate seeing all the hard work come to fruition over the coming weeks.”
A representative from Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council commented: “We very much welcome the start of this work to transform our High Street and are delighted that Newtown has developed a reputation for innovation, sustainable investment and as a place for renewal.
“This project fits in well with the community’s wishes identified in the Newtown Place Plan to enhance our street scene, and the investment in our town at this difficult time is very welcome indeed.
“Sadly, no major project can take place without some inconvenience whilst the works are completed safely, but the end result will be an enhanced shopping experience. Once again, we thank the businesses and residents for their co-operation and understanding whilst these improvements to our town are made.”
