Treorchy Library Set For New Look

RCT Council is carrying out extensive works at Treorchy Library, marking a new ‘chapter’ in its history and making it more accessible for all users.

The works include the redesign of the main reception area, providing a more flexible space and information point for users, as well as providing a Box Office support of the adjacent Park and Dare Theatre.

The works also include the creation of a multi-purpose gallery and exhibition space for the display of a wide range of visual and creative art and artefacts, by professionals, community groups and individuals.

The main lending library is also being reorganised throughout, along with the relocation and new design layout of the popular children’s area, accommodating a raised platform that can be used as a performance space.

IT facilities at Treorchy Library are also being improved as part of the improvement works, costing over £150,000, with funding provided by the Council and Welsh Government’s Museums, Archives and Libraries Division.

To facilitate the extensive improvement works, Treorchy Library currently offers a limited service, with the main area of the premises closed to the public until Friday, November 15.

Councillor Rhys Lewis, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Well-being and Cultural Services, said:

“I am delighted that improvement works are currently being carried out at Treorchy Library for the benefit of its users and the whole community.

“The library is a focal point of the area, as are our libraries in towns and villages across Rhondda Cynon Taf. Their vital role within our communities was highlighted during the pandemic, with the introduction of the Order and Collect service, which remains popular

“We ask all users of Treorchy Library to bear with us during the improvement works, which once completed will be of great benefit to everyone. Users are also able to visit any other library within the County Borough.”

At Treorchy Library, the Order and Collect service continues as normal, with the collection point at the rear of the premises. However, the browsing of books is not permitted at this time.

The E-teens remain open under current restrictions, with users accessing the premises via the side door that leads directly to the E-teens area.

Recycling and trade waste bags are also available for collection as normal and two public access computers are available for use, limited to one-hour sessions.

The One4all service also remains open to customers with appointments, accessing the service from the rear of the building. Both the payment kiosk and free telephone are unavailable during the improvement works.

Treorchy Library users can visit any other library within the County Borough during this time. The reference and local history service is currently unavailable at Treorchy Library, but normal service continues at Pontypridd and Aberdare libraries.
