Morriston will be transported back to Victorian times at a Christmas-themed event taking place towards the end of November.

A Victorian barrel organ, Santa’s grotto, a brass band and circus workshops will be among the fun at Victorian Day 2023, which is being held in the town from 10am to 2pm on Saturday November 25.

Christmas carols, a Christmas tree trail and stilt walkers in Victorian outfits will also feature.

Organised by Swansea Council, the event is being funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

As well as street entertainment, venues hosting activities on the day will include the Morriston Tabernacle Chapel, St David’s Church, Morriston Library, the Sacred Heart Centre and the shared workspace at 65 Woodfield Street.

No road closures will be in place during the event.

It’ll take place the day after Morriston’s Christmas lights switch-on and parade.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Investment and Tourism, said: “This family friendly event – now being held for the third consecutive year – helps generate a wonderful festive atmosphere in Morriston, while also creating more footfall and spending for shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and other businesses in the town.

“The Victorian theme of the event is especially appropriate for Morriston too, given the town’s growth in the Victorian era and the presence of so much Victorian architecture there, including the Tabernacle Chapel.

“A detailed Victorian Day 2023 programme will be made available closer to day of the event as preparations continue.”

Other activities already confirmed include a selfie mirror where people will have the chance to take selfies dressed in Victorian costumes.

Reconfiguration work will also soon be starting to convert the Tabernacle Chapel – which dates back to 1872 – into a vibrant community resilience hub.

The Tabernacle Morriston Congregation has successfully applied to Swansea Council for £450,000 through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund for the project.

To date, funding for the project has also been secured from the Welsh Government’s Community Facilities Programme and Transforming Towns Programme, the UK Government’s Community Ownership Fund, the Welsh Church Act Trust Fund and the People and Places Programme through the National Lottery Community Fund.
