Wales’ Leading First Aid Charity Launches Mental Health First Aid Training

Wales’ leading first aid charity, St John Cymru is delighted to announce the launch of its newest training course; Mental Health First Aid.

Designed to increase awareness and help alleviate the stigma of mental health in the workplace, a wide range of topics will be covered during training including; depression, stress, anxiety, PTSD and psychosis.

The course also aims to increase the availability of support to those affected.

Debbie Rees, Business Manager at St John Cymru said:

“Three in five employees have had mental health issues because of work

“We understand the importance of mental health awareness at work and the effect it can have not only on the person affected but also their team.

“With more and more people now having the confidence to come forward to their employer detailing their mental health, we believe it’s important that businesses are fully equipped to support them,” she added.

The 12-hour Mental Health First Aid (Wales) course is part of the national training programme for Wales and its partners include the Welsh Assembly Government and Training in Mind.

St John Cymru has fully qualified trainers who will be delivering courses across both North and South Wales.

Not only does each training session cover a range of mental health issues, it will also offer participants tools and techniques they can use to approach someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Mental Health First Aid training is available to those over the age of 18 and classes can accommodate up to 14 people.

Open courses are available to book onto on the St John Cymru website or groups of employees can be trained on site in the workplace.

It is hoped the introduction of the Mental Health First Aid training will help businesses work closer with their staff and work towards a better understanding of their well-being at work.
