A major new Assassin’s Creed title has dropped, and it’s powered by one of Wales’s rising creative studios.
Cardiff-based Sugar Creative developed Discovery Tour: Medieval Baghdad, an interactive educational game that’s set to launch globally. It marks another milestone in the region’s fast-growing creative tech sector – with Welsh-trained talent now leading international collaborations with Ubisoft and top global museums.
This is a real-world example of how targeted support from Creative Wales and regional funding is paying off:
- Sugar has scaled from a startup to an export-ready studio
- Talent trained in Wales is staying to build sustainable careers
- The project is drawing international attention to what Wales can offer the gaming and tech industries
Jack Sargeant, Culture Minister, said: “Sugar Creative’s success is a testament to their team of highly skilled, talented and passionate creatives, and I’m hugely proud that a Welsh games studio was chosen by leading games company Ubisoft to develop its educational app. Assassin’s Creed is loved and played by millions of fans all over the world, and Discovery Tour App: Medieval Baghdad will be an excellent addition to Assassin’s Creed Mirage, adding even more depth of knowledge and historic learning.
“The Welsh Government via Creative Wales has nurtured a successful partnership with Sugar Creative for some years; having initially supported the Wallace & Gromit: The Big Fix Up AR mobile game, and the team has also joined our trade missions to the world’s biggest industry gathering at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco to showcase their talent and build new connections.
“Creative Wales is also proud to have supported this project at its early stages through its Development Fund and it is thrilling to see how Sugar Creative and Ubisoft used that support to co-create a mobile discovery experience that truly exceeds expectations. I’m excited to see how Sugar Creative’s story unfolds. It certainly is an exciting time to be a games studio in Wales.”
