An annual residential to Wales’ most westerly farm included a very special guest this month as Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal paid a visit.
Year Six pupils from Pembroke Dock Community School enjoyed a week’s stay at Lower Treginnis Farm, with the yearly experience an amazing chance to experience rural life.
At this year’s visit pupils were joined by Farm for City Children patron The Princess Royal, with pupils Erin Hubbard and Jack Kinnard presenting Her Royal Highness with a gift before she left.
Headteacher Michele Thomas said: “The experience at Treginnis gives them a deep respect for rural life and they develop good independent skills from the moment they arrive. Pupils have shown tremendous resilience when achieving tasks and challenging themselves to try new things.
“A visit to the farm, where they participate in all of farm life really is an experience of a lifetime and pupils make strong lasting friendships and memories. In addition to this it was an absolute honour for the staff and children to be part of the Royal Visit, and it is will be something they won’t forget.”
While pupils took part in learning sessions with the Lower Treginnis Farm team Her Royal Highness was shown what they were discovering about the farm to fork process, before being told of the impact of a week at Farms for City Children for those attending.
Year Six teacher Nicola Davies added: “The children have been enjoying a wonderful visit to the farm and have been learning so much about nature, working on a farm and rural life in general. To be honoured with such a special visitor as well has been fantastic.”
Tim Rose, Head of Operations for Farms for City Children said: “We were delighted to welcome The Princess Royal to Lower Treginnis and to share the experience of being ‘farmers for a week’ with her. Her visit was greatly enjoyed by everyone at the farm and it was our pleasure to be able to show her how the work of the charity interacts with so many different aspects of the Pembrokeshire community.
“We are hugely appreciative of Her Royal Highness’s continued support and enthusiasm for the work that we do.”
The Princess Royal also met representatives of the Friends of Treginnis, fundraising from which supports visits from local schools, and representatives from Car-y-Mor, a seaweed farm initiative from St Davids.
