RCT Council and Linc Cymru (Linc) have provided a progress update on the exciting project that is building a new extra care housing development in Porth. The state-of-the art facility will deliver 60 extra care apartments and first-class amenities, with work on course for completion in spring 2026.

Last year, contractor Intelle Construction restarted the project’s work activity, to transform the unused former Dan y Mynydd Care Home site into a modern extra care development. The four-storey building will also provide its residents with key facilities such as a dining area, hair salon, activity room, and day care centre – supported by other spaces like offices and a visitor car park.

Good progress has been made over the summer months, which is shown in the latest images from the development site. The building’s roof has now been completed, and the large scaffolding is also removed. The exterior images illustrate large sections of the completed brickwork, along with other features such as the windows, doors, pillars and balcony areas that are now in place.

Internally, installation of the lifts and kitchen areas has started, along with the sanitary installations. Decoration is also underway throughout the building.

Other important completed activities include the installation of the National Grid substation, and electric meters over two of the floors. Meter installations over the remaining two floors are due for completion in early October. Finally, groundworks and work to install an attenuation tank have also started.

Councillor Gareth Caple, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care, with responsibility for Adult Services, said: “It’s fantastic to see the continued progress towards delivering this exciting development in Porth, which is on course for completion next spring. It’s the latest example of the Council’s commitment to modernise care accommodation for older people and, as part of this, to increase the number of extra care beds to meet need.

“I’m confident the new 60-bed development will be an invaluable addition to Porth, with our existing extra care accommodations in Talbot Green, Graig and Aberaman already established as popular hubs. Extra care housing has many advantages – it creates a vibrant community within each building and promotes meaningful interactions in the local community, while residents can live independently for as long as possible with access to 24/7 support for their assessed needs.

“Our multi-million pound investment in new care accommodation does not stop there. We’re currently progressing work on site to build a specialist residential care accommodation in Gelli, while planning permission has been secured for a development in Mountain Ash that will provide a mix of extra care, residential care, and ‘Later Living’ housing. We’re also committed to future schemes in Ferndale and Church Village, focusing on residential dementia care and supported living for adults with learning disabilities respectively.

“We continue to welcome our very strong partnership with Linc to develop and operate many of these schemes, including the ongoing works in Porth. I was welcomed on a site visit in April 2025, and the progress made since then is very clear to see – as many recognisable features of the new building are now in place. Thank you to Linc and our contractor Intelle for their continued hard work, as this scheme progresses towards completion during the spring.”

Jo Yellen, Projects Manager, Linc Cymru, added: “Seeing the building really take shape over the past few months has been fantastic. With the roof now complete, scaffolding removed, and key internal works well underway, you can really get a sense of the quality of the spaces we’re creating. Each milestone brings us closer to delivering a modern, welcoming environment that will make a real difference for older people in Porth.”
