Pembrokeshire County Council is pleased to announce the start of improvement works at Bridgend Square, Haverfordwest as part of the wider construction of the Haverfordwest Transport Interchange Project.

Evan Pritchard Contractors Limited will progress a package of engineering enabling works in the existing Bridgend Square Car Park.

This consists of kerbline realignment, relocation of bus shelters and signage information, installation of crossings and footways, and relocation of existing lighting and CCTV assets.

These works are required to implement a temporary bus station which will serve as the primary bus station following decommissioning of the current facility at the existing multi-storey car park (subject to planning approvals).

The temporary facility will be reached by buses via a new access off the A487.

Perrot’s Road Car Park will be unaffected by the works, with access maintained throughout. Disruption will be kept to an absolute minimum.

The existing Bridgend Square car park will be closed from Sunday 13th March, with works mobilising from Monday 14th March.

This car park will remain closed until further notice, however, it is envisaged to be closed for up to two years.

The work is preparing for the development of an improved multi-storey car park in the heart of Haverfordwest, upgrading the facility to a modern Public Transport Interchange fit for the future.

These designs include a much more welcoming and improved environment, public toilets and changing place facility, upgraded pedestrian and cycle facilities, a more efficient and integrated bus station, and construction of a new modern multi-storey car park to service the town centre.

Works are scheduled to begin on the main infrastructure improvement during May this year, subject to planning approvals.

The Haverfordwest Public Transport Interchange plans are scheduled to go before the County Planning Committee on 16th March 2022.

The design and construction of the Haverfordwest Transport Interchange Project is being funded from Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund.

Cllr Paul Miller, Cabinet Member for Economy, Leisure and Tourism and Cllr Phil Baker, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, welcomed the enabling works and the forward planning involved.

They said: “The Haverfordwest Public Transport Interchange is a major project and one that, subject to planning, has the opportunity to create a modern, integrated facility that provides an impressive gateway to heart of the County Town.

“We are planning to create a seamless journey and a clear transition for passengers using the transport facilities, encouraging people to alight and explore the town centre and linking with the Council’s other ambitious plans for Haverfordwest.

“It is only right that we now begin to get measures in place to allow bus services to continue as the project progresses.

“We continue to examine ways to free up extra parking spaces across Haverfordwest to mitigate for the loss of the multi-storey car park spaces as we develop the project.

“We will continue to communicate clearly with the public as we progress through this exciting project.”

Local County Councillor, Cllr Thomas Tudor, added: “I’m pleased that this project is now moving forward and developing.

“Getting the temporary bus stop in place is important as we work through the demolition and construction phases of the Public Transport Interchange project, subject to planning.

“I thank residents and businesses for their patience and understanding as we work to create this new upgraded facility for the County Town.”
