The Work Welsh programme, led by the National Centre for Learning Welsh and delivered locally by Learn Welsh Gwent, has been hailed by Estyn as a cornerstone of workplace language planning in Wales.
In a recent report, Estyn praised the scheme, which delivers a range of training and support for strengthening bilingual skills across workplaces and for its positive impact on services delivered to Welsh speakers.
Since its launch in 2018, Work Welsh has supported over 30,000 workers and 2,000 employers, with Learn Welsh Gwent delivering training across the Gwent region.
Local examples include a project with Newport City Council, where over 100 staff attend weekly classes with a tutor from Learn Welsh Gwent, leading to an increase in the day-to-day use of Welsh at work.
Geraint Wilson-Price, Director of Learn Welsh Gwent, based at Coleg Gwent, said:
“The National Centre’s Work Welsh programme opens up new opportunities for people to learn and use Welsh in the workplace, and we were delighted by Estyn’s positive report, which also highlights the Newport City Council project.
“As well as tutor-led courses, Work Welsh offers a range of other learning opportunities, including online and residential courses, tailored for different sectors and employers.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the National Centre to further develop this programme.”
Estyn praised Work Welsh for:
-
Targeted support for hesitant speakers, especially those at the Intermediate level and above.
-
Using on-location tutors to build confidence and influence language attitudes and behaviours.
-
Making a difference in high-profile organisations such as the Football Association of Wales, Welsh Rugby Union, and Wrexham AFC, as well as in local authorities like Newport City Council.
