A football club will be able to return to playing home games within its own community thanks to a £150,000 investment in new changing facilities at a Newport park.
Preparation work is already underway at Lliswerry Pond for a new changing block which will provide facilities for two teams, including showers, as well as an additional changing room for referees and officials.
Alway FC has been playing its matches at other venues during recent seasons but will become the primary user of the new facilities once work is complete.
The investment of around £150,000 will bring the facilities up to the requirements of the Gwent County Football Association, allowing the club to play its home fixtures more locally.
Councillor Mark Spencer, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for sport and communities, said: “As a council, we have made a commitment to grassroots sports and have been carrying out a programme of improvements across the city to benefit local clubs and players.
“I’m delighted that work has now begun on these new facilities for Lliswerry Pond which will be of great benefit to Alway FC and look forward to visiting when the work is completed.”
The investment forms part of a sports fund established earlier this year.
The fund aligns with the council’s playing pitch strategy, which sets out a vision to create a fit-for-purpose network of pitches and supporting infrastructure across Newport to meet demand and promote health and wellbeing.
