Roads in Swansea, damaged by winter weather, are getting more investment to help repair them.
Swansea Council’s Highways Maintenance Teams have been working hard to repair thousands of potholes since the beginning of the 2023, as well as completing larger resurfacing schemes.
The city’s roads suffered widespread damage as a result of a wet and cold winter period in the early part of the year.
In March, the Council approved £3.468 million to help fund highways and infrastructure improvements.
This week, plans have been approved to invest a further £2million in 2023/24 to help with the repairs. £1million is being brought forward from a budget allocation approved for 2024/25 and will be funded through the Council’s insurance reserves. A further £1million will be invested this year as part of a £3million allocation over the next three years.
The latest funding announcement also follows on from an agreement in May to invest £450,000 into road repairs.
Main roads which are earmarked for major resurfacing in 2023/23 include Neath Road in Landore, Mumbles Road, Gors Avenue in Townhill, Nantong Way, Swansea Road – Llewitha, Middle Road in Gendros and M4 Junction 47 at Penllergaer.
Pothole teams have also repaired more than 1,500 defects since the beginning of April as part of the Council’s 48hr pothole repair pledge.
Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment & Infrastructure, said: “We already agreed significant investment into our roads across the city when we approved our budget earlier in the year.
“The impact on our roads during the winter months has prompted us to look at how we can further invest. Many roads suffered quite severe damage and our pothole repair teams were busier than they have ever been, fixing record numbers of potholes.
“This extra money will ensure we not only complete the planned maintenance we have in place, it will also assist us in responding to calls from the public to repair roads in their communities.”
