COLLEGES have joined forces with popular Welsh personalities to promote the value of the language to students’ future careers.
Coleg Cambria and Coleg Gwent will host an online employment session tomorrow (Thursday) at 6pm.
Sesiwn Sgwrs will also feature popular presenter and writer Nick Yeo, well known for his appearances on the S4C digital platform Hansh, and musician Ifan Pritchard, lead singer of award-winning pop-rock band, Gwilym.
Nick will discuss the benefits he experienced in learning the language, how it impacted on his career and the creative industries and will be on hand with tips and advice for anyone learning or thinking about learning Welsh.
There will also be a presentation by North Wales Police on the importance of bilingualism in the public sector – notably when recruiting to new roles – and Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol will give an overview of life as a Welsh student at a university in Wales, highlighting what courses are available and future advantages in the world of work.
Haf Everiss, branch officer for Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol at Coleg Cambria, said the interactive event will give young people the opportunity to have their say and ask questions on a variety of issues regarding employability.
“Together with Coleg Gwent we wanted to give learners and anyone looking to embrace the medium of Welsh a chance to find out what is out there for them, especially in the workplace,” said Haf.
“As well as the creative industries and public sector, there are many different careers that value the language, and for some it is an essential aspect of their culture and ethos.
“We want students to think about their futures and how Welsh can play a part in the choices they make. Hopefully, we will get a positive response and can help shape that process.”
Owain Williams, Welsh Coordinator at Coleg Gwent added: “Adapting to the constraints of COVID-19, we need to ensure we continue to provide Welsh-medium extra-curricular opportunities for further educational learners.
“At Coleg Gwent, we continue to expand and embed Welsh language provision within the college’s infrastructure.
“Working collaboratively with other Welsh colleges is a big step in creating an inclusive and bilingual work environment for all staff and learners. We believe this is an opportunity for both Welsh speakers and learners to celebrate their relationship with the language.”
