The Welsh Government’s new Counsel General, Mick Antoniw, has been sworn into office at a ceremony at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday 28th May.

The Counsel General is the Welsh Government’s chief legal adviser and representative in the courts. Earlier this week the Senedd passed a motion agreeing the nomination.

Mick Antoniw has been an MS since 2011 and was a practising solicitor before his election to the Senedd. He studied at Cardiff Law School, University of Wales.

He has also been appointed to the role of Minister for Constitution and will play an active role in constitutional affairs during this Government term.

Mick Antoniw, Counsel General & Minister for Constitution, said:

“It’s a privilege to have been sworn in as Counsel General.

“The pandemic has shown the importance of laws made in Wales to people’s everyday lives. Our laws are closely linked to our constitution and this Government will look to lead a national civic conversation about our constitutional future.

“Protecting devolution will be crucial as we look to build a greener, stronger, fairer nation.”

The Counsel General has a number of statutory responsibilities, as well as other responsibilities focused on liaison with the legal sector. The role is appointed by Her Majesty on the recommendation of the First Minister.
