All works associated with the demolition of the former Bingo Hall and Angharad’s Nightclub buildings in Pontypridd are complete – resulting in the single lane closure on A4058 Sardis Road now being removed.
The Council’s appointed contractor Walters Ltd began the significant work to remove the buildings in March 2021, in order to enable future redevelopment of the prominent town centre site. A significant contribution was secured from Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns initiative to complete this work.
Residents, commuters and visitors to Pontypridd town centre will have noticed the positive progress made on site over recent weeks and months, as the buildings were gradually demolished to ground level. This process was officially completed on Friday, August 27, with traffic arrangements returned to normal – including the A4058 southbound lane closure which is now lifted.
Following these works, the Council’s contractor is in the process of vacating the site. Temporary drainage measures have been installed to serve the site, while a large hoarding is in place around its perimeter for security. The area will be regularly monitored in order to ensure its current condition is retained.
In relation to future use, the Council continues to explore a number of options. As previously announced, engagement is ongoing with the hotel sector to explore whether there is an opportunity to deliver a quality designed hotel as part of the redevelopment, to drive footfall and spend within the town centre. The Council is also working with a commercial advisor and urban designers to explore what other opportunities or alternatives are presented by the site.
Councillor Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Housing, said: “With the demolition of the Bingo Hall site in Pontypridd now complete, the Council has reached a huge landmark in its aspiration to redevelop the strategic site – to bring it back into use after many years for the benefit of visitors, businesses and residents.
“The Bingo Hall project is an integral part of an exciting regeneration of Pontypridd – alongside a number of key redevelopments such as Llys Cadwyn, the Pontypridd YMCA revitalisation, and the £4.5m investment in the Muni Arts Centre in partnership with Awen Cultural Trust. As we’ve seen with Llys Cadwyn, these projects aim to bring new life to key sites, offer valued services for the community and attracting new visitors to the town centre.
“The Council continues to explore several options for the future of the Bingo Hall site, to bring forward an exciting and deliverable project. Any options that are progressed will be shared with stakeholders, businesses and residents in due course – including full consultation in any future planning application.
“With the demolition phase now complete, I’m pleased that the temporary traffic lights on Sardis Road, adjacent to the site, are now able to be removed. I’d like to thank residents and commuters for your cooperation as this necessary arrangement was put in place in order to safely complete the work.”
