Cabinet to consider proposal for new Welsh-medium seedling school

Cabinet members at Bridgend County Borough Council will consider a proposal that could result in the development of an all-new Welsh-medium seedling school when they meet next week.

Following Welsh Government’s recent announcement over the next phase of its capital grant scheme for Welsh-medium education, Cabinet members will be asked to give their approval for an expression of interest to be submitted on using the funding to establish a new seedling school.

If agreed, the council will explore options for adding the seedling school to existing plans that aim to create a new Welsh-medium childcare facility in the Porthcawl area.

Cabinet has previously provided approval in principle for the development of a one-form entry Welsh-medium school to serve the Porthcawl area as part of its ongoing school modernisation programme, aligned to the development of the Porthcawl Regeneration Scheme.

As well as reflecting anticipated growth in the Porthcawl area, basing the school and the childcare facilities at the same location would deliver the most efficient use of any funding that may be provided for the scheme, and would also provide a natural progression from the childcare provision through to the seedling school.

Cabinet will meet to discuss the proposal and whether an expression of interest should be submitted to Welsh Government on Tuesday 14 September.
