The new Cardiff Northern Cemetery, on  Thornhill Road, will officially open on Wednesday, October 20, providing much needed burial space in the north of the city for the next 15+ years.

The cemetery design includes lawn graves, traditional graves, cremated remains graves, as well as a natural burial area that will be managed to increase biodiversity within the site.

The site has been designed and landscaped with additional tree planting to provide a therapeutic and holistic experience for those who have lost friends and relatives.

Councillor Michael Michael,Cabinet Member for Clean Streets, Recycling and Environment  said: “This new cemetery provides a long-term solution to the need for more burial space in the city.

“Our city has a growing and diverse demographic, and we have a duty and responsibility to meet the needs of our residents in life as well as death.

“The overall design of the site has been considerate to the environment and minimised the visual impact of the area.

“The only building is a toilet block for visitors, which has been installed with a living wildflower and grass roof to encourage biodiversity.

“Northern Cemetery will be sensitively managed to make sure it becomes a welcoming space for the benefit of residents and visitors as well as for local wildlife.”

The official opening will take place at the site on Wednesday, October 20,where a ceremonial boulder will be unveiled to mark the occasionby the Leader, Councillor Huw Thomas and Cabinet Member for Clean Streets, Recycling and Environment, Councillor Michael Michael.

In attendance will be the Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Rod McKerlich;local funeral directors and monumental masonsand representatives fromThe Soroptimists from Cardiff, who will be planting a tree to mark the centenary of Soroptimist International, a global volunteer movement who work at a local, national and international level to educate, empower and enable opportunities for women and girls.
