A revised map outlining Bridgend County Borough Council’s plans for creating a local active travel network has been submitted to Welsh Government.
With almost £3.3m funding in place to support the scheme, the ambitious map forms part of the local authority’s commitment towards providing a comprehensive network of active travel infrastructure.
It will offer greater choice for residents who wish to use alternative ways of getting around such as cycling or walking.
As well as offering an alternative to using motor vehicles, active travel provides a wide range of benefits such as increased health and wellbeing, improved social inclusion and walking or cycling for pleasure. It also offers environmental benefits associated with reductions in noise and air pollution.
The revised map reflects the views of Bridgend County Borough residents gathered as part of an extensive public consultation exercise as well as feedback from a preliminary review undertaken by Welsh Government.
Active travel networks are becoming increasingly popular and are destined to be a prominent local infrastructure feature all across the UK. Not only do they ease congestion and take the strain off local roads, they offer more reliable journeys, cost savings and environmental and health benefits. We encourage more people to live active lives, and this map will help us to provide further healthier alternatives for travelling across short distances such as to school or the shops.
