State-of-the-art hydrogen technology and sci-fi Transformers star Bumblebee will be hoping to transform perceptions about clean air in our communities later this month.

Visitors will also get the chance to use a bit of pedal power to create their own smoothie at the second annual Clean Air Roadshow in Castle Square on July 28.

As well as an eye-catching visit from 10ft tall Bumblebee, Swansea University will also be on hand with a bike that people can pedal to generate their own hydrogen car fuel.

Taking place in Castle Square from 10am to 4pm, the event is aimed at showcasing electric car technology and other innovative, sustainable forms of transport to encourage take-up and help Swansea cut its carbon footprint.

Swansea Council is organising the Clean Air Roadshow, with support from Swansea BID (Business Improvement District) and its Big Heart of Swansea brand.

Low carbon and electric vehicles will be on display from the likes of Kia, Mitsubishi, Days Motor Group and Nissan, featuring vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf and Kia Sportage.

Also taking part will be BMW’s i3 and i8 cars which were an eye-catching success last year.

Electric vehicles from the Swansea Council and Swansea University fleets will also be there, along with Mid and West Wales Fire Service and their Hyundai hydrogen vehicle.

Also there will be Santander Cycles Swansea highlighting the new bike hire service between Swansea University’s two campuses and the city centre.

Cllr Andrea Lewis, Cabinet Member for Homes and Energy, said:

“With well over 150,000 plug-in electric cars now registered, the UK currently has the seventh most vehicles of this kind on the road, but we’re looking to be pioneers of this technology here in Swansea.

“This is important to help the city further cut its carbon footprint and leave a greener, more sustainable Swansea for generations to come.

“Working alongside our partners in the private and public sectors, the Clean Air Roadshow demonstrates the type of electric and hydrogen vehicle technology that’s out there nowadays.

“We’re also exploring the introduction of more electric car charging points in Swansea to make sure we have the infrastructure in place to support people’s aspirations.

“We hope this event will highlight all that’s being done across Swansea to promote sustainable travel.”

Amelia Rudman, Projects Manager at Swansea BID said:

“This is another great, crowd-pulling event in the heart of the City Centre that will bring some fascinating displays and activities while boosting valuable footfall for our BID area businesses, so we are delighted to give it our support.

“We would encourage visitors to drop by – we realise that since this is a green fair some visitors may opt to take public transport – but those who are driving can take advantage of the £3 for three hours car parking rate at the nearby St David’s multi storey car park.”

Bumblebee, one of the stars of the Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg Transformer franchise, will be showing off his trademark dance moves between 11.30am and 2.30pm. ParkLives, the council’s community sports team, will be inviting visitors to have a go on the multi skills assault course and those looking for a thirst-quencher will be able to use the smoothie bike to generate their own special drink.

Representatives from Oriel Science, Swansea Environment Forum and Friends of the Earth will also be on hand to promote the ways in which you can support Swansea’s bid to become a clean air zone.
