UWTSD and Cricket Wales join forces

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and Cricket Wales are delighted to announce an exciting partnership to improve cricketing facilities in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

The collaboration between both organisations will include the installation of a three bay cricket net at the University Carmarthen campus Sports Centre.

The nets will provide a much-needed focal point for cricket in the area, facilitating opportunities for the University’s students as well as young people in the community to get involved in cricket through club, college, NGB and other recreational activity. Most notably the Cricket Wales regional programme will utilise the facility as young people across Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire look to hone their skills as part of the national pathway.

The University prides itself on providing a clear commitment to innovation, enterprise and its ability to equip graduates that can make a significant difference in society. The recent partnership between the two organisations will contribute towards its role in the development of social and cultural capital, as students will be able to enhance their employability and experience by accessing opportunities across Cricket Wales’ coach education programmes. Work experience opportunities within coaching will also be available on site within NGB activity and more widely across the region.

As Cricket Wales Head of Talent Pathway Matt Thompson, expressed his gratitude to the University.  He said:

“We are ecstatic about the partnership. Once we were aware of UWTSDs interest in developing this provision it became clear very quickly that this would be a terrific match. Both organisations are passionate about being leaders in service delivery, which ultimately comes back to facilitating fantastic opportunities and experiences for young people.

It is no secret that there’s been a shortage of high quality, fit for purpose cricket facilities in the region and we’re just grateful to UWTSD for working with us to bring this to fruition. We look forward to many years of collaboration and partnership.”

Gwilym Dyfri Jones, Provost of the Carmarthen campus commented:

“The University welcomes the partnership with Cricket Wales and the opportunities it will provide for our students and the wider community here in West Wales.  The new facilities at our Carmarthen campus will be a boost to the cricketing community, providing young cricketers in particular with access to the best resources to develop their talent without having to travel great distances.  The University values the opportunity to work with such organisations as Cricket Wales and I look forward to our future collaboration.”

UWTSD’s Head of Technical Services, Cenwyn Jones added:

“It’s been a pleasure to be part of the project that brings excellent indoor cricket training facilities to our campus in Carmarthen providing our students as well as the local community with the opportunity to train and develop their cricket skills throughout the year regardless of the weather.

There are currently very few indoor training facilities available locally, therefore this new facility enhances the sporting opportunities available to our students, the wider community and possibly even young cricket stars of the future.”
