Poundland Foundation opens for new grants for kids’ sports groups

The Poundland Foundation – the charity launched by the retailer last year – has today opened up a two-week window for the latest round of grants made available for children’s sports organisations across the UK.

Grassroots sports groups from every part of the country are invited to apply for support of up to £750 for new kits and around £210,000 will be available to award 280 grants.

After the first grant window last summer, the Poundland Foundation awarded 150 grants in September, giving away more than £100,000.

Successful applicants included basketball, boxing, cheerleading, dance, football, Gaelic football, hockey, watersports, martial arts, netball, rugby, table tennis, twirling and volleyball. They came from all corners of the country, from Exeter to Edinburgh, Belfast to Barnsley and Merthyr Tydfil to Motherwell.

Applications for the latest round of grants can be made from 28 February to 13 March via the Poundland Foundation website.

Applications are accepted from all community groups and organisations, except schools, working with children under 18 in any sport or physical activity. Further details of eligibility and how to apply are given online and grants will be made to successful applicants by the end of April.

Barry Williams, managing director of Poundland, said: “We had a fantastic response to our first round of grant applications and it was wonderful to be able to provide money for kits for so many fantastic clubs and organisations.

“The Poundland Foundation was created to make a big impact on local communities and what better way to do that than by helping youngsters get involved in physical activities.”

Money for the foundation comes from in-store fundraising, carrier bag donations and the partnership with Pennies, the charity that collects micro-donations through chip and pin machines.

The Poundland Foundation continues to support Poundland’s existing charity partnership with Make-A-Wish® UK, Tommy’s and Whizz-Kidz with a £2.5 million commitment over two years.
