Caerphilly Council has successfully appointed globally renowned Grimshaw Architects to design a landmark interchange in the heart of Caerphilly town centre as part of significant regeneration plans, supported by Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme.

Working in partnership with Welsh Government, Transport for Wales and the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) and with support from the Design Commission for Wales we are developing and expanding the public transport network through the South Wales Metro and the electrification of the Core Valley Lines. A new, modern and fit for purpose interchange in Caerphilly is set to serve in excess of 1 million passengers, annually.

The Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr. Philippa Marsden said, “Caerphilly town has an enviable location in the heart of the South Wales valleys and boasts a world class heritage site with one of Europe’s best medieval castles. It is well connected to Cardiff and the wider Capital City Region and the town has huge potential for growth. The major enhancement of a central transport hub within the town is an essential part of the formula to help us unlock its full potential.

She continued, “Successful remodelling of the interchange will act as a catalyst to other development opportunities in the town centre whilst at the same time helping towards a modal shift to public transport. The interchange project will help lay the foundation from which the town can overcome economic challenges and stimulate further activity to make Caerphilly a thriving town centre. I am therefore very excited by this project and keen to see an exemplar transport interchange be developed in the heart of the town centre.”

James Price, Chief Executive of Transport for Wales said: “The work of Transport for Wales plays a pivotal role in the Welsh Government’s ambitious plans for developing transport networks across the country and in encouraging the people of Wales to change the way they travel.

“We are very pleased to be working collaboratively with all of the partners involved in delivering this work and I am confident that this modern, distinctive interchange will offer huge value to the people of Wales. The new facilities will support individuals to travel seamlessly between bus, rail, walking and cycling and make it far easier for people to make sustainable travel choices which will benefit our communities and our environment.”

Rick Roxburgh, Associate Principal, Grimshaw said, “We are delighted to have been selected for this transformative project in Caerphilly and share Caerphilly Council and Transport for Wale’s ambitions for an exemplar multimodal and active travel hub. We are excited to lead the design team [including Hoare Lea, OPS Structures and Momentum Transport] and begin this collaboration to deliver a transport interchange which will enhance the town’s connectivity for future generations, and become something that the people of Caerphilly are truly proud of,”
