RCT Council is giving advanced notice of a refurbishment scheme to Imperial Bridge in Porth – requiring a road closure at the bridge section of Pontypridd Road and temporary bus arrangements locally.
The closure will begin on Monday, April 25, to carry out steelwork repairs to structural elements of the bridge, repainting of all steelwork and decorative parapets, installation of expansion joints and resurfacing. The bridge bearings will be replaced and the bridge deck waterproofed – while masonry and concrete repairs will be made to the abutments, ballast walls and wingwalls.
The Council has appointed Centregreat Ltd as the contractor for the scheme, which is due for completion later this year. The work requires the closure of around 75 metres of Pontypridd Road, from its junction with River Terrace.
Residents will notice some site activity taking place before the road closure comes into effect on April 25, as the contractor sets up its site compound.
From April 25, an alternative route for northbound traffic heading towards Porth Town Centre is via A4058, Porth Street, North Road and Pontypridd Road. Southbound traffic heading towards Eirw Road or Pontypridd should proceed via B4278 Llwyncelyn Road and A4058.
Access for pedestrians will generally be maintained throughout the road closure, but there may be short periods when access is restricted to ensure safety. The Council’s contractor will arrange for a shuttle service to operate during these times, and the Council will give notice of this service to residents. Access for emergency service vehicles will not be maintained during the work.
During the works, Stagecoach Service 132 (Cardiff-Maerdy) will serve Porth Town Centre as usual in both directions, but will be unable to serve Eirw Road due to the road closure – diverting via Llwyncelyn Road and Britannia Bridge in both directions. Services 124 (Cardiff-Maerdy) and 131 (Royal Glamorgan Hospital-Maerdy) will use their normal southbound route, but will operate via the A4058 while travelling northbound, stopping at Porth Police Station.
Eirw Road residents will be served every 30 minutes by Service 150 (Gilfach Goch-Porth) on Mondays to Saturdays, from 7.45am to 7.30pm. An hourly shuttle bus service will run on Sundays – transporting passengers via Llwyncelyn Road onto Porth Town Centre, to connect with Service 132 and other services for onwards travel.
