Renowned Welsh artist Bryn Richards is celebrating his 100th birthday with an auction of his paintings on 24 May, with proceeds going to City Hospice.

Born in Roath, Bryn has had a colourful life over the past century, starting his artistic journey at the Cardiff School of Art, before joining the Royal Navy and serving in Scotland, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

After the war, Bryn taught in Lancashire for a short while, then returned to Cardiff to teach at his alma mater, marrying and having two daughters before becoming a professional art critic writing for The Guardian and The Anglo-Welsh Review.

He exhibited his work across the country throughout the 82 years in which he was active, only stopping painting three years ago.

His life as an artist will be celebrated at Cornerstone, Cardiff with champagne and canapes, before a live auction of 43 of his paintings, led by BBC Bargain Hunt auctioneer Ben Rogers Jones of Rogers Jones Auctioneers.

Profits from the auction will be donated to Cardiff charity City Hospice which provides specialist palliative care for patients with life limiting or terminal illnesses in Cardiff, in addition to services for patients’ families such as counselling and bereavement support.

Bryn said: “I’d like to thank Nicky Piper of City Hospice and my daughters for organising the event and Ben Rogers Jones for being our auctioneer. I can’t really believe I’m about to turn 100 years old and it’s an honour to be able to celebrate it in such a way.”

Ben Rogers Jones said: “I’m delighted to be the auctioneer once again for an event that supports City Hospice, as I know the great work they do caring for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

“Some lovely pieces of art are available from Bryn Richards, and I look forward to celebrating his birthday by honouring his career.”

The auction is free to attend, but notice of your attendance must be given in advance by emailing[email protected]
