Bridgend launches consultation as part of Net Zero 2030 target

Bridgend County Borough Council declared its own climate emergency in June 2020 and set up a Climate Emergency Response programme to commit to the Net Zero 2030 target as an organisation.

The Bridgend 2030 Net Zero Carbon Strategy, or ‘Bridgend 2030 Strategy’ is the initial strategic step in achieving this commitment. The strategy will also remain an integral part of the council’s Corporate Plan and Wellbeing Plan.

Councillor John Spanswick, Cabinet Member for Communities said: “The council’s target of Net Zero Carbon by 2030 aims to balance the greenhouse gas emissions we produce with the number of gases we are removing from the atmosphere.

“Getting people’s views and ideas on how we can work towards achieving this target will make a big difference in ensuring we reach it.”

As part of the target, the council has launched a consultation seeking the public’s views on decarbonisation, specifically, climate change, the council’s commitments, proposed initiatives, reducing our carbon footprint and more. Decarbonisation is the process of reducing ‘carbon intensity’ and lowering the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by burning fossil fuels.

Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Future Generations, Cllr Rhys Goode said: “Participating in this consultation is so important, as it will impact how the Bridgend 2030 Strategy is implemented and how as a local authority, we combat the effects of climate change.

“Climate change is something that not everyone knows about, but everyone is a part of. Human activities are the main driver of climate change, and we must take action now to help the planet and to pave the way for future generations.”

The consultation will be live from 9 June 2022 until 30 August 2022 and residents are encouraged to take part and have their say to ensure that the Bridgend 2030 Strategy is delivered effectively.
