Delyn AM lends a hand at holiday hunger scheme

Hannah Blythyn AM for Delyn joined volunteers to help serve lunch to youngsters as part of a programme aimed at tackling food poverty during the summer holidays.

Flintshire Council and its partners – including Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Clwyd Alyn Housing Association – joined forces with “Can Cook” to launch an ambitious “Share Your Lunch” programme, providing 20,000 free meals – 800 meals a day – over the six week summer holiday period to play schemes throughout Flintshire.

Hannah Blythyn AM met with play scheme volunteers at the Gas Lane play area in Mold to learn more about the programme and lend a hand serving lunch to the children attending on the day.

Hannah Blythyn AM said: “It was good to see the children enjoying their time off, having fun and I joined the team at Gas Lane to help serve up Bolognese and pasta to ensure the youngsters received a meal when perhaps they may not have been able to.

“Food poverty is the inability to afford, or to have access to, food to make up a healthy diet. Children are going hungry because their parents cannot afford to buy food.

“This is a great initiative to help combat this unacceptable situation and I was pleased to have been able to help provide food for our young people who may have found themselves going without this summer.”

The Share Your Lunch programme is being delivered to 20 play schemes across Flintshire this summer.
